FIGHTING FRIZZ

Why it happens & what to do about it

Ahh, frizz. Our least favorite guest-of-horror when all we want is sleek and shiny. We’ve all encountered it, battled it, and fallen in defeat. Is there any sure way of fighting unwanted frizz? Good news: heck, yes.

Luckily for our strands, understanding it can help us conquer it with a few, simple methods. But before we dive deep into beating it, what exactly is it?

WHAT IS FRIZZ?

Frizz is hair that does not align with the surrounding strands and instead stands up or curls separately (miss independent, much?). It creates that “fuzzy” texture that we try hard to tame.

WHAT CAUSES IT?

In short: dryness. When hair lacks moisture, hair cuticles roughen and open, seeking moisture from the surrounding air. This causes the hair to swell and change shape. In other words: hi frizz! This is why humidity is often frizz’s friend. But aside from weather and dryness, there are other common culprits that can make hair more vulnerable. We’ve listed them below, along with some tips and tricks to quell the frizz:

1. TOO ROUGH TO HANDLE

Wrapping wet, post-shower hair into an abrasive hair towel can draw moisture out of the hair, causing frizz. What you can do about it: Use a microfiber towel instead to help tame frizz and reduce hair damage. Applying a lightweight, nourishing hair oil like RG Cosmetics Argan Oil can also help treat dryness and deliver shine.

2. IT’S GETTING HOT IN HERE

It’s tough to admit, but the heat from styling products can strip hair of its natural oils and damage the shaft, making hair more vulnerable to falling into a frizzy frenzy. No thanks! And although we all love a nice, steamy shower, our hair could do without it. Washing hair with extra hot water can also strip it of natural oils, making it susceptible to the almighty frizz. What you can do about it: For hair health that is tried and true, it’s best to avoid excess heat when showering and to protect hair when styling. For a quality heat protectant you can trust, we recommend RG Cosmetics Patua Thermal Protector, which works to protect and nourish at the same time.

3. TOO MUCH, TOO OFTEN

All shampoos are not created equal - and washing with harsh shampoos on a daily basis can especially exacerbate the problem, messing with your hair’s natural equilibrium. What you can do about it: Rather than washing your hair every day, come up with a wash-day routine 2-3 times a week, depending on your hair type. Incorporate a hydrating shampoo and conditioner to also fight frizz. Our go-to is RG Cosmetics Pracaxi Shampoo and Mask Conditioner, which combines rich vitamins, fatty acids, and the Amazon's secret weapon, Pracaxi, to protect hair and make it soft, glossy, and frizz-free.

4. BROKEN TIES & DAMAGED ENDS

Split ends are not our friends. Damaged, brittle ends are not only more susceptible to frizz but also invite danger to the rest of our locks. The longer they stick around, the more likely it is for hair damage to trickle up the strand and cause further stress. We’re good, thanks. What you can do about it: Schedule regular cuts every six to eight weeks to keep hair looking and feeling top-tier. Between cuts, you can coat your hair with a quality hair product that uses ingredients like Squalene, found in RG Cosmetics Collagen Hair Mist, that works to mend breakage, split ends, and dryness.

The Verdict

While we can’t always predict or control when frizz makes a feature, understanding it and adopting these methods and products is a surefire way to help us control it. And if the humidity is just a bit higher than normal, throw your hair into a light bun or a braid before stepping outdoors. Fighting frizz is never too hard.
